SIP & Data vs. ISDN

Is the argument for which will suit the customer – SIP & Data or ISDN over?

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), Basic Rate Access (ISDN2) and Primary Rate Access (ISDN30) was intended to provide voice and data. And as we know, an ISDN channel has a bandwidth of 64Kbits and by combining the ISDN channels together you can get a larger data connection. Unfortunately in the UK very few ISP’s provided the ability to connect via 64k fixed circuits and at around the same time ADSL was just starting and proved to be the better service. ISDN delivered on the promise of voice quality and since the 1980’s many businesses have used ISDN for the delivery of their voice systems. However, it has been unsuccessful in its promise to deliver quality for data.

ISDN – you’re just getting Voice

In effect you’re paying for voice and data but only receiving the voice. Plus, with ISDN you only have the following features: DDI and CLI. However, the reliability of ISDN has never been in question. Things do go wrong and that’s life; it’s how your provider reacts when there’s a problem which is the biggest test of all.

SIP – a clear alternative

SIP Trunking is not a new technology but is still not fully understood. So, firstly what is SIP Trunking?

SIP Trunking is a service that connects your PBX phone system to the PSTN with an IP network instead of an ISDN.

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the standard for VoIP (Voice-over-Internet Protocol) services enabling voice systems to be provided over the internet instead of over traditional telephone lines. This has enabled many businesses to migrate from having different systems for their voice and data networks into having one that does both.
Trunking is a dedicated method of allowing different telephones to share a set number of lines.
When selling SIP at any size you need an understanding of data networking, from site to ISP and ISP to SIP provider. With this knowledge and understanding of the basic features and benefits every end user would install SIP. There’s no question that SIP offers more than ISDN but customer’s need to be reassured and know which products and applications best meet their needs now and beyond.
